We welcome your Request for Child Baptism

Baptism Policy Document

Baptism is the sacrament of welcome and initiation into the Christian Church.

In our church, we ask that parents prepare for baptism as a significant event in their lives, the life of their child, and our church.

The normal practice of The United Church of Canada is to baptize publicly during a Sunday Service. It is important for the congregation of the church to be present. The family takes direct responsibility for the Christian training of a child (in the case of child baptism) and makes a declaration of faith. It is expected that parents who bring children to be baptized have themselves been baptized.

The congregation reaffirms their faith, and promises to help in the Christian education and spiritual growth of those who participate as a part of the church family.

We welcome your interest in having your child baptized at Laidlaw Memorial United Church. We ask that you fill out the Baptism Request Form online so that your request for baptism may be presented to the Church Council for approval, and so that we may keep an accurate record of baptisms that take place at our church.

We take joy in your inquiring about baptism and requesting Christian baptism for your child.

We believe that baptism marks the beginning of a process of education and nurture in Christian faith and practice at home and through participation in the church.

For this reason, it is important that we encourage you and your family to be a part of the life of your church.

We believe it is the responsibility of parents to grow in Christian faith, and to see that their children receive Christian Education and nurture.

We believe it is the responsibility of the church to provide a community of faith that welcomes all people and seeks to encourage growth in faith.

You can help us to provide a welcoming community of faith by answering this question: What are the three most important things that make you feel welcome in our church and encourage you to come to church more often?

Godparents are welcome, though not required, in the baptismal service. If you wish to name godparents and have them participate in the service, please give their names.

Provide us with Sundays that might be possible dates for the baptism of your child to take place?

Occasionally, we receive requests for baptism from persons who are not residents of our community and will not be able to attend our church regularly. If this is the case for you, please tell us the reason for requesting baptism at our church, and the name of the Christian Congregation where you and your child will be participating to grow and learn.
